Millions of households could be in line for payouts from their energy supplier for faulty smart meters under new rules set out by the energy regulator.

Households whose broken smart meters are not fixed within 90 days will soon be able to claim £40 compensation from their suppliers, Ofgem said.

The change means millions may soon be able to claim. Damning official figures reveal that up to 3.5m smart meters have “gone dumb” because they have lost their ability to send energy usage information.

Government insisted on the speedy rollout of the interim technology. Which is now not working because it was interim and is now superceded. But it’s the ‘leccie companies who have to pay, not government.

That’s a dark, wry, snigger, not one of mirth.
